In 4th grade, we work on building a conceptual understanding of long division. Students will be taught a strategy that builds on their knowledge of multiples (basic facts) and their knowledge of how to multiply numbers by 10 and 100. We will find “partial quotients” and add to find the total quotient. This strategy is a natural progression for students since we found “partial products” in multiplication. For parents however, it may be an entirely new strategy for learning long division. Although the traditional algorithm for long division used to be taught in 4th grade, it has now been moved to the 6th grade math curriculum. We know this new strategy can provide a challenge for parents since most (or all!) of us were taught the traditional algorithm when we were young. Below are videos and anchor charts that can help students at home as needed.
